A North Carolina mother was arrested after allegedly leaving her six-week-old baby in her car while working a shift at McDonald’s.

On December 2, police issued two warrants for the arrest of Nikita Jones, 21, on one count of misdemeanor child abuse and one count of felony intentional child abuse resulting in serious physical injury.

According to WRAL, a local NBC affiliate, the arrest warrants allege that Jones not only left her newborn baby unrestrained in her car, where police say the temperature was only 40 degrees, but she also apparently struck the baby in the face, causing visible bruising around her eyes.

According to police, Jones left her baby in the car on Nov. 21 and turned it off when she entered the McDonald’s restaurant in Raleigh to begin her shift. According to the warrants, Jones struck her baby the day before, on November 20, and the girl had bruises, swelling, and scratches on her face.

It’s unclear how long the baby was in the car before anyone discovered her, and details about her current condition are unavailable.

Jones was arrested and held on a $50,000 secured bond for the felony and $5,000 for the misdemeanor, according to court documents obtained by WNCN, a local CBS affiliate.

The court will arraign her on the felony charge on December 10. She will return to court for the misdemeanor on December 19.
