Blacksburg, Virginia — Extreme winter weather is expected to hit Virginia on Sunday, with a wintry mix turning to snow and dangerously cold temperatures continuing into next week.
Residents west of the Blue Ridge Mountains should prepare for temperatures to drop below zero, with wind chills reaching -20°F in higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service, the extreme cold watch will go into effect Sunday night and last until Wednesday morning.
Light snowfall of 2 to 4 inches is expected in the New River Valley, with up to 7 inches in western Greenbrier. Snow and freezing rain on Sunday afternoon may make roads treacherous, including portions of I-81.
Cold winds will reach their peak on Monday night, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
Tuesday’s high temperatures are expected to be in the single digits, with nighttime lows of 4°F. Those going outside should layer up with insulated clothing and cover any exposed skin.
By Wednesday, conditions will improve slightly, with sunny skies and highs near 21°F. However, officials advise caution because pipes may freeze and icy patches may persist.
To prevent damage, local authorities recommend dripping faucets and keeping an eye on vulnerable neighbors.
Milder weather could return by late week, but there may be more snow showers. Stay informed of any changes by following the National Weather Service or local alerts.
