An Arctic air mass is moving into Maryland and northern Virginia today, bringing snow, freezing rain, and sub-zero wind chills by Monday.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday, with snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches expected throughout the region, including Baltimore and surrounding counties.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will fall throughout the area this morning before clearing by evening.
Road conditions on major highways such as I-95 and US 50 are expected to deteriorate rapidly, with snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour. Temperatures will drop into the teens tonight, with wind chills falling below zero by Monday morning.
Residents should avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions to protect pets, pipes, and outdoor property from the extreme cold. Gusty winds may also cause drifting snow, reducing drivers’ visibility.
The extended forecast indicates that frigid conditions will persist until midweek. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, high temperatures in Baltimore will only reach 23°F, with wind gusts of up to 30 mph making it feel much colder.
Tuesday will bring a slight chance of snow flurries, followed by sunny but bitterly cold weather on Wednesday, with highs near 19°F.
Officials recommend calling 511 for local road conditions and staying up to date on weather.gov. Prepare for delays and dress warmly as the region deals with this severe winter weather event.
