When will the 2025 COLA increase show up in the bank accounts of eligible SSDI recipients? The Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed. In fact, it won’t be in 2024; the 2.5% COLA increase starts in January. So, if you get Disability Insurance, you won’t be able to get the cost-of-living adjustment raised just yet.
People in the US who get Supplemental Security Income will be the only ones who can get the 2025 COLA increase in 2024. If you got SSDI on December 3 and also get SSI, the 2025 COLA increase for SSI will be sent to you on December 31, 2024.
Date for the 2025 COLA if you are on SSDI
On January 3, 2024, the first Social Security Disability Insurance payment with the new COLA will be sent out. You must have applied for and received benefits before May 1997 in order to get money on this payday.
If you didn’t get SSDI already, you can start getting it on January 3, 2025, if you also get Supplemental Security Income. The 2025 COLA increase will also mean that Disability Insurance payments will be made on the following dates:
- January 8: Disability Insurance beneficiaries born from 1-10
- January 15: Disability Insurance beneficiaries born from 11-20
- January 22: Disability Insurance beneficiaries born from 21-31
How much will the 2025 COLA increase SSDI benefits?
The amount of all SSDI benefits will go up by 2.5%. With that amount, you’ll get $2.50 for every $100 you get from Social Security. This means that if you get a $1,000 payment, your new check after COLA will be $1,025.
If you get SSDI and are eligible for an average payment of $1,542 in 2024, you will get about $1,580 after the COLA boost. This is an extra $38 a month, which is about $11 less than the average boost for retirees.
With the COLA, the biggest SSDI payment will go up from $3,822 to $4,018, which is the same amount. You can see that this boost has nothing to do with the regular COLA that everyone gets.
The reason for this is that these payments depend on the taxable maximum going up more than the annual COLA does.
