Acheese was recalled in three states because to fears that it had Listeria Monocytogenes, and it has now been assigned the highest risk designation for a recall.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled 133 containers of Wicklow Gold Cheddar Nettle & Chive Cheese in Maine, Colorado, and Ohio on December 18, and classified the recall on January 27.
Why It Matters
According to the FDA, the cheese was classed as a Class 1 recall, which means that consuming the chips might result in “serious adverse health consequences or death.”
In this situation, a Class 1 recall was issued due to the presence of Listeria Monocytogenes in the cheese, which can be lethal if consumed by certain individuals.
What To Know
Ingesting Listeria Monocytogenes can cause high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. It can be fatal for immunocompromised patients, babies, and people over the age of 65. It can also cause stillbirths and miscarriages in pregnant women.
This cheese is distributed by Abbey Specialty Foods in Fairfield, New Jersey, which announced on January 3 the recall of both their Nettle & Chive Cheese and their Wicklow Gold Cheddar Tomato & Herb, which was also recalled due to Listeria.
They stated that as of January 3, there had been “no confirmed reports of adverse health events due to the consumption of these products.”
So far in January, this cheese has been the lone recall for Listeria, however on January 7, the FDA recalled Blue Ridge Beef’s Kitten Mix Pet Food for potentially carrying Salmonella.
What People Are Saying
According to an FDA press release from Abbey Specialty Foods, the recall was launched after our supplier, Wicklow Farmhouse Cheese LTD., told us that certain items were being recalled due to probable Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
“Consumers that have any of the recalled products listed in the table above should refrain from consuming them and return them to their place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of the products.”
What Happens Next
Customers in Maine, Colorado, and Ohio have been advised not to consume Wicklow Gold Cheddar Nettle & Chive Cheeses with a sell-by date of June 2nd, 2025.
