Two major winter storms are bearing down on the United States this week, with Chicago and Washington, D.C. expected to receive some of the season’s highest snowfalls.

Winter storm watches and warnings are in effect from Colorado to Delaware, affecting cities such as Chicago, Louisville, Kentucky, Baltimore, and Richmond, Virginia.

The first storm will hit Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning.

By 7 a.m. ET Tuesday, heavy rain is expected from Dallas to Nashville, Tennessee, with snowfall from Louisville to Richmond.

The snow will arrive in D.C. by noon on Tuesday and could last for more than 12 hours.

Four to six inches of snow are possible in the D.C. and Baltimore areas, with one to three inches in Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, heavy rains in the South could cause flash flooding.

A flood watch is in effect for parts of Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia. Some areas may receive up to a half-foot of rain.

By the time the first storm leaves the East Coast, the second one will have begun in the Midwest and Plains.

On Wednesday, heavy snow will fall in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois.

By the afternoon, heavy snow will have spread from Chicago to Detroit. The Windy City could get up to six inches of snow.

Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are expected in Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston on Wednesday night. The storm will transition to rain overnight.

Both storms will produce heavy snowfall in the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic, as well as potentially flooding rain across much of the South.
