Tragic incident in Odessa as twin babies lose their lives to drowning; caretaker taken into custody

ODESSA, Texas — According to the City of Odessa, twin one-year-old boys drowned and died on Wednesday in the 800 block of Humble in Odessa.

When the Odessa Police Department (OPD) and Odessa Fire Rescue arrived, they found two one-year-old twins who had been hurt by drowning.

Even though first responders and emergency medical workers worked hard to save both babies, they died on the way to Medical Center Hospital.

During the OPD’s investigation, they found that the person who was watching the kids at the time was 34-year-old Joan Reyes de Jesus. The mother of the twins paid De Jesus to watch over them.

Police in Orange County found out that De Jesus put the kids “into the bathtub, turned on the water, and left the bathroom to watch TV.”

The OPD says that De Jesus then fell asleep and was not awake for a while.

Based on the evidence given to OPD, it was at least 30 minutes before the family noticed the twins were in the bathtub.

De Jesus is being charged with two counts of hurting a child. Her bond is set at $1 million all together.
