‘Stemming from jealousy’: according to police, a girlfriend shot her boyfriend dead after discovering texts from another woman on his phone

A 23-year-old woman in Texas has been arrested for allegedly killing her boyfriend, shooting him in a jealous rage after discovering messages from another woman on his cellphone.

Tatyana Evans was arrested on Tuesday and charged with one count of murder in the death of Geovanni Montague, authorities said.

According to a news release from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and homicide detectives responded to a report of a murder victim in the 10700 block of Barely Lane, near Jones Road, early on February 9.

When first responders arrived at the address, they discovered Montague, who appeared to be suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and lay motionless in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Montague and Evans were in a “volatile” romantic relationship, and investigators believe the shooting was motivated by jealousy.

Montague and his mother lived in the Oak Grove apartment complex, which is near where his body was discovered, according to Houston CBS affiliate KHOU.

According to court documents, investigators spoke with Montague’s mother, who stated that she and Evans were “dating partners,” describing the relationship as “violent.”

The mother claimed that Evans had “previously caused serious injury” to her son, who filed a police report in December 2024 based on Evans’ threats against him, though court records show that no charges were filed against Evans in connection with the alleged incident.

Detectives were able to obtain surveillance footage from the area, which allegedly showed a car matching Evans’ description leaving the area around the time Montague was fatally shot, KHOU reported.

The footage reportedly showed the vehicle speeding away from the scene with its headlights turned off.

Investigators discovered that on February 8, Evans and Montague spent several hours together at Montague’s apartment before Evans left to return to her mother’s apartment. Montague called Evans and informed her that he had accidentally left his cellphone in her car.

Evans found the phone in her car and “found texts” to Montague that were “from another woman.” According to investigators, Evans then “took a.45 pistol and returned to confront [Montague]” about the messages.

According to police, during the confrontation, Montague “grabbed her by her jacket,” which is why she “shot him 5-6 times,” then “left him in the street” and returned home.

Evans was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army who had previously served in Afghanistan, the sheriff’s office said.
