SSI update: No payment on December 1, here's the new payday Social Security set

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments aren’t always sent on the same day every month. Checks and direct deposits are usually sent out on the first of the month. On the other hand, these days may fall on a holiday or right after a weekend. When this happens, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has to change when people get paid.

Because of this, the SSI payment that was supposed to happen on December 1 has been moved to a different date. The Social Security Administration has set the direct deposits and checks for November 29 because it won’t be possible to send them on December 1. That’s 48 hours ahead of time, or two days.

How much money will SSI recipients get on November 29, 2024?

In the event that you are still eligible and nothing has changed in your personal or financial life, you will receive the same amount as on November 1, 2024. SSI payments are about $697 a month on average, which is less than the $698 that the SSA reported in their last monthly report. Look at all of these possible payment amounts:

  • Average Supplemental Security Income for all beneficiaries: $697
  • Average Supplemental Security Income for the under 18 group: $813
  • Average Supplemental Security Income for those recipients aged 18-64: $743
  • Average Supplemental Security Income for those beneficiaries aged 65 or 65+: $574

The people who get SSI must report any big changes in their lives, like getting married, starting a new job, or any other event. This is because the amount of your payment might be different. It might go up or down from time to time. It will depend on what’s going on.

Will the November 29 SSI payment include the cost-of-living adjustment (2025 COLA)?

The December SSI payment, which is due on November 29, 2024, will not include the 2025 COLA increase. People who get benefits will have to wait until December 31, 2024, to use the 2025 COLA increase.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will get the 2.5% extra much sooner than people who get retirement or disability benefits from Social Security. Everyone else will have to wait until January 2025 to get it.

Remember that people who are retired or who get SSDI will get their first payments in January from January 3, 2025, to January 22, 2025. If you have little or no money and a low income, you can apply for SSI.
