The Federal Government doesn’t give everyone who gets SSI the same amount of money. In fact, even the average amount of Supplemental Security Income you get changes as you age.
Just so you know, the average payment for everyone is worth $697.50 as of October 2024. Keep in mind that this program can only help low-income families up to $943.
This means that a lot of people don’t get the full amount, and they get a big cut. They can do this because they have other ways to make money.
One example is that if you get SSI and Social Security at the same time, your payment amount will change.
SSI average payment amounts by age
The Monthly Statistical Snapshot for October 2024 from Social Security shows that younger people who get Supplemental Security Income usually get more money.
In this case, the average payment for someone under 18 years old is $803.97. That’s about $106 less than what all beneficiaries would normally get. But the difference is even bigger when people 65 and older are taken into account.
On average, seniors aged 65 and up get only $576. The main reason they get such a small payment is that they might also be getting senior citizen benefits from Social Security.

SSI and the average payments between 18-64
People between the ages of 65 and 18 who get Supplemental Security Income are called “under-18s.” It costs them about $745 a month as of October 2024.
You can get up to $1,415 if you are married and get SSI. The Social Security Administration has not yet announced any average payments for married couples who are eligible.
People who are needed can also get money from this Federal payment. There are no average amounts either, but the most you can get in benefits is $472.
The 2025 COLA increase will not be part of any of these payments due on November 29. Everyone will get a share of the paycheck.
Supplemental Security Income maximum amounts after the 2025 COLA increase:
- $967 for a single person
- $1,450 for married couples who qualify
- $484 for an essential person
