SSI or SSDI? Which disability benefit has Social Security scheduled first?

Disability benefits are given to people who have a certain type of disability and meet other important requirements set by Social Security. SSI and SSDI are the two most important monthly payments for people in the US who can’t work because of a medical condition. Disability Insurance gets paid four times a year, and Supplemental Security Income gets paid once a month.

But there are times when things don’t follow the rules. So, Social Security needs to make changes that could affect how often people in the United States who get SSI or SSDI get paid. Because of this, SSI will be sent out in November instead of December 1.

SSDI and SSI: payments left in November

If you are eligible for any of the November SSDI payments, you will not be eligible for the next SSI payment. Why is this? People who get SSI or SSDI get their Disability Insurance payment on December 3, and they got it back on November 1, 2024.

If you want to get a Social Security Disability Insurance payment after November 6, you need to:

  • have your birthday from 1-10: payment on November 13
  • have your birthday from 11-20: payment on November 20
  • have your birthday from 21-31: payment on November 27

All people who are still eligible for Supplemental Security Income will get their December payment on November 29. But the most and least that you can get from SSI and Disability Insurance are not the same.

SSDI and SSI payment amounts

SSI is a program that helps people and married couples with low incomes. The amounts they pay are much lower because of this. They start at $472 for an essential person and go up to $1,415 for a married couple who is eligible.

People who get SSI can get up to $943 a month, or about $697 if they don’t get any reductions. The SSA says that SSDI payments can be about $1,539 a month on average. This means that there is a big difference.

Also, the most you can get from SSDI is $3,822. The 2025 COLA increase is not part of any of the November payments for disabled Americans.
