Salem police arrested a suspected dealer following a fatal overdose

SALEM — Salem detectives arrested a 20-year-old Massachusetts man on Tuesday following an undercover investigation that linked him to a suspected fatal overdose.

Cesar Kelvin Carvajal Lara of Lawrence was charged with selling fentanyl in excess of 5 grams, a special felony, after detectives discovered 10 grams of suspected fentanyl.

The arrest came after an investigation into a suspected overdose death on March 1 at a Salem residence.

Detectives posed as the deceased victim and arranged for the suspected dealer to drive to Salem and sell drugs.

Carvajal Lara was arrested near the overdose victim’s home and is being held without bail.

He is due to be arraigned today in Salem District Court and is being held on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer.

According to police, the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed.
