The going-out-of-business sales are underway at Joann Fabrics, which is closing 500 of its 800 stores around the country amid its second bankruptcy in a year.
The Hudson, Ohio-based retailer’s restructuring plan was approved by the court on Friday, February 14, according to its website. Over the weekend, clearance sales began at the approximately 500 locations that were closing.
“As part of the ongoing Chapter 11 process and our efforts to maximise the value of the business, JOANN has filed a motion seeking court authority to begin closing approximately 500 stores across the nation,” a spokesman for Joann said in an email.
“This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our Team Members, our customers and all of the communities we serve.”
When will Joann stores close?
The 500 stores that are closing will shut their doors for good in the next few months, the company announced on joannrestructuring.com. However, the timing is flexible, per the website. Some stores may close sooner, some later.

Stopped by my soon-to-be-closing Joann Fabrics. Most sales are 20% off right now, with a few select collections a little more, and Christmas leftovers are 70%. I expect those will go up in the coming weeks

Shoppers saddened by closures of Joann stores
Daleena Fredrick-Banks, an Akron seamstress who had worked at Joann for about ten years, noticed “quite a few empty pegs, not a lot of variety of quilting fabrics” at the Canton Road location near Akron over the last year, according to a previous story in the Beacon Journal.
In addition to a lack of inventory, staffing was an issue. Lately, the store has only had two employees, “the bare minimum.”
However, she never considered these issues to be a sign of the store’s closure. “I would have never guessed that it would have come to this,” she told me.
More people were upset online about the upcoming closures.
“It was so nice to be right around the corner and able to just pop in when I needed inspiration for a new project,” one Facebook user wrote.
“I’m not happy that the one in Lakemore Plaza is closing. I live just around the corner…”I could walk there if I had to,” another Facebook user added.
