Months after suffering injuries during the Gaza Pier mission, a U.S. soldier passes away

The U.S. Army confirmed that a soldier who was hurt during last summer’s Gaza pier mission has died.

An online death notice says that Sgt. Quandarius Davon Stanley, 23, died on October 31. He was one of three soldiers hurt on the Gaza pier mission, which was to help people in Gaza during the war between Israel and Hamas.

The Biden administration wanted to build a temporary pier to make it easier for aid to get into Gaza. The project lasted from May to July, cost almost $230 million, and didn’t deliver nearly as much aid as it had promised.

The mission failed because of bad weather and mistakes in planning, but the military still saw it as a success.

The Army confirmed Stanley’s death in a statement sent to Reuters. The young soldier had just retired from the army and was now getting long-term medical care.

“Stanley was an instrumental and well respected first line leader in the 7th Transportation Brigade Expeditionary (TBX), especially during the mission to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza,” Col. John Gray, the unit’s leader, said.

According to the deputy commander of U.S. Central Command in June, two soldiers on the mission got a sprained ankle and a minor back injury.

The official said that the third service member, who was not named at the time, got hurt while helping with the mission and had to be taken to an Israeli hospital.

“We have clear eyes, and we will continue to look at force protection all day, every day,” U.S. Vice Admiral Brad Cooper said. “Right now, we think the operations can go on.”
