Melania Trump, the former First Lady and wife of Donald Trump, spoke at a naturalization ceremony in Washington, DC, prompting criticism for her behavior as First Lady.
The grandmother from Slovenia said: “My personal experience of traversing the challenges of the immigration process opened my eyes to the harsh realities people face, including you, who try to become US citizens.”
Melania was praised by fans for her “pure elegance” at the event, but a body language expert said she appeared “anxious.”
However, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, a former aide to Melania during her time as First Lady, has strongly criticised the speech.
In an interview with CNN, Wolkoff, author of the book ‘Melania and Me’, said: “You know, back to today’s naturalization, being in the National Archives with our Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Despite her immense privilege as an American citizen, Melania Trump assured me that she would never discuss her immigration story with journalists.
I had to beg her to follow simple American traditions and support American designers. It was a battle every day.
While it’s unclear which American traditions Wolkoff is referencing, Melania Trump did not hesitate to wear items by US designers like Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, and Calvin Klein during her tenure as First Lady.
