Every day it seems like a new bank branch closes, and that feeling isn’t just a thought. In the first two weeks of October alone, 46 local branches of US banks closed for good. There will be a lot more before the end of the year.
Citizens Bank shut down fifteen branches in just two weeks, which was the bank that closed the most this time. Huntingdon closed eleven stores, U.S. Bank closed nine, and Bank of America, Wells Fargo, First National Bank of Texas, and Chase all closed one.
These sites are added to the 754 bank branches that have closed in the first nine months of the year. The closures are spread out, but Illinois and Pennsylvania have been hit hard in October, with eight and seven, respectively.
If this rate of closings keeps up, there could be over 1,000 bank offices across the country without customers by the end of the year. Even scarier, researchers at Self Financial looked at data on net closures, which have been about 1,646 per year since 2018, and came to the conclusion that the very last bank branch in the U.S. could close by 2041.
All of this is just a guess, but with the rise of online banking, the need for real locations has gone down a lot. A representative for U.S. Bank told DailyMail.com, “Clients’ banking habits and preferences are changing. For example, they are quickly moving to digital and mobile banking platforms and want things to be easier.”
Our physical footprint is being looked at again, and in some cases, branch locations are being merged in some areas as we change with our clients. We are closing some branches, but we are still opening and improving others, and we are also quickly improving our internet services.
