People in Massachusetts understand that retail can be a difficult business, and as more people shop online, brick-and-mortar stores are struggling to stay open.
In recent years, more stores have closed, and the trend does not appear to be slowing. Macy’s is one retailer that has recently received a lot of attention in the media. The retailer has been around since 1858 and plans to close 66 stores this year.
According to a company press release, the closures are part of a strategy to return the company to long-term, profitable sales growth. While the company intends to close 66 stores this year, the master plan is to close approximately 150 underperforming stores over a three-year period while investing in Macy’s 350 future locations through fiscal 2026.
The press release quoted Tony Spring, chairman and CEO of Macy’s, Inc., as saying the following.
Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service.
Good news for Massachusetts residents and shoppers: Macy’s will only close one Bay State store in 2025. That store is located in Independence Mall in Kingston (101 Kingston Collection Way, STE 1).
The following is posted on Macy’s website regarding the upcoming Kingston closure:
