Lying in wait': A man lurking in grandmother's bedroom closet stabbed her to death in a surprise attack, police allege

A Maryland man turned himself in to police, allegedly telling them that he stabbed his grandmother to death after “lying in wait” at her home.

Spencer Dillon Hamilton, 27, is being held without bail after Montgomery County Police charged him with first-degree murder.

According to court documents obtained by WRC, an NBC affiliate in Washington, D.C., Hamilton walked into the Rockville City Police Station on Sunday around 8 p.m. and told officers that he had just killed his grandmother, 87-year-old Pauline Yvonne Titus-Dillon. Officers went to her house and discovered her dead.

According to the documents, which were also obtained by local Fox affiliate WTTG, Hamilton allegedly told police that he was “lying in wait” in his grandmother’s bedroom closet early on March 30.

Titus-Dillon left her bathroom around 4 a.m. and went into her bedroom, where her grandson allegedly assaulted her.

Hamilton allegedly confessed to stabbing her in the back and head, strangling her, and punching her in the face and head, and said he was carrying the suspected murder weapon when he was arrested. Police have not stated whether he had a motive for the alleged killing.

Hamilton then told the police, according to court documents, that he moved his grandmother’s body and attempted to clean up the scene. Before leaving the house, he allegedly stole her phone, credit cards, and laptop computer.

Hamilton was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He is currently being held without bond.

Hamilton stated in court on Monday that he intended to represent himself. WRC reported that after hearing this, the judge consulted with a public defender and ordered Hamilton to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He is due back in court on April 7.
