This week, a local woman made history by riding a water bike from Sausalito to the Farallon Islands. Jessica Schiller set out on this adventure with a bigger goal in mind.
Schiller told, “A lot of people thought I was crazy!” while speaking in a Sausalito park. In the forefront was one of her iconic Schiller water bikes.
That same level of “crazy” could be applied to Schiller’s ten-year-old idea of launching a water bike business. but undoubtedly regarding her most recent hardship.
“It’s the first-ever bike ride to the Farallon Islands,” she explained.
There are special difficulties when traveling sixty miles from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Southeast Farallon Islands.
“I knew there were going to be rough seas, strong current, wind of course, and it’s great white shark migration season,” Schiller stated.
Thus, Schiller set out on her arduous journey on Friday morning before the sun rose.
“It would probably be 150 miles, if we were to do this on land,” she said.
Schiller was thinking about a certain someone who encouraged her to keep going.
“I call this ‘Naomi’s ride,’ in honor of the promise I made to my daughter Naomi, who sadly passed away from a fentanyl overdose in July of 2022,” Schiller stated. “That promise came true in 10 hours.”
“I felt her when I made it to the islands and my first emotion was – I broke down and cried,” she said.
The non-profit Shatterproof, which combats the addiction issue in America, will get the proceeds from Schiller’s ride. Schiller hopes that her path will serve a greater good for everyone in addition to combating the stigma associated with addiction.
“I hope this motivated people to step out of their shell to accomplish something, that it’s possible. must leave your comfort zone behind. That’s how human growth occurs,” Schiller remarked.
