This week in Elizabeth, what began as a love celebration turned into a tragedy that no one could have predicted.
On Wednesday, Jan. 1, it was reported that Naket “Naky” Trinidad had been killed just one day after her boyfriend, Jose Melo, proposed to her at a local nightclub.
As of press time, officials had not issued a statement. However, court records show that Melo, aka DJ Melo, was charged with Elizabeth’s murder on a warrant dated December 30, 2024.
Melo was charged in 2009 with kidnapping, simple assault, and aggravated sexual assault-robbery/kidnap/homicide, among other things.
A Facebook video captured Trinidad accepting Melo’s proposal at Bamboleo Night Club on December 29. “I love you, baby,” he captioned the video.
Friends and loved ones flooded the post with congratulations and excitement for the couple’s future together. However, as word spread of Trinidad’s death, those messages of joy were replaced with condolences.
“Wow wow, how HORRIBLE this GUY 😡 did this 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡,” one person exclaimed. “God rest in his holy glory Flaka Naky Bella 💐 RIP”
“Extremely shocked and confused,” another said. “I have no idea what happened between that night and the next morning.”
There’s no reason to take someone’s life. It’s unfortunate that so many people’s lives have been ruined, particularly their children. “RIP Flaca.”
According to Daily Voice, authorities were called to a Florida Street home around 9 a.m. on Monday, December 30. It didn’t take long before the scene was declared a crime scene.
Trinidad’s family has identified her as the victim of the fatal attack on Monday, December 30 through a GoFundMe campaign.
“Naky was senselessly taken from us in an act of evil,” according to a GoFundMe campaign started by Trinidad’s aunt, Yolanda.
“This horrible act by someone she trusted left her two children without either parent and with very little options for their future.”
The family described the challenges they are now facing. Trinidad, who has no other family in New Jersey, leaves behind two young daughters, according to the campaign.
Her relatives in Florida are handling her affairs, while her aunt is in charge of the arrangements in New Jersey.
