A big civil settlement of $4 million was reached between grocery store chains like Albertsons, Vons, and Safeway after they were accused of false advertising and unfair competition. It is, in fact, a lot of money.
Due to customer complaints, this settlement comes after it was found that advertised prices and actual prices for some food items were not matching up. Some locations showed prices that were higher than what was advertised, according to the complaint.

The lawsuit seems to say that the price differences were caused by problems with the scanners, whether this was done on purpose or not. This caused a lot of customers to complain.
As the complaints poured in, thorough investigations showed that several stores were selling foods with wrong weight labels, which made customers even more unhappy.
A recent complaint said that when grocery items like meat, bread, and produce were weighed in-store, they had less product in them than what was written on the label.

Imagine picking up a package of ground beef thinking it will have 1.4 pounds of meat in it, only to find that it might only have 1 pound. In their main argument, the plaintiffs pointed out this difference.

The California Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office did something after getting enough complaints. They were able to get a settlement for people who were overcharged.
“Ensuring that companies accurately weigh and price products is a top priority for my office, especially in today’s economy,” said District Attorney Carla Rodriguez about how important it is for people to trust businesses.
The Sonoma County Agriculture Commissioner/Weights and Measures Department works with her Environmental and Consumer Law Division to make sure that prices are set correctly in the community.
