Social Security has a complex payment schedule, and knowing when your payments will arrive in their bank accounts can make a significant difference for many beneficiaries.
This is especially important for those on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), who are among the most vulnerable recipients of benefits.
SSDI pays monthly benefits to people with disabilities that prevent or limit their ability to work. This disability must impair your ability to work for a year or more or result in death, and you must have worked for at least five of the previous ten years to be eligible for this benefit. Depending on your age, this work requirement may not be as strict.
Those who can still work must do so in a limited capacity, as SSDI has a maximum income that a worker can earn before being considered ineligible for the benefit. This is known as money earned through “substantial gainful activity” (SGA).
In 2024, SGA is $1,550 per month, or $2,590 if you are considered blind by the Social Security Administration. SGA rules differ for self-employed individuals, as many disabled people choose to work for themselves to avoid the constraints of a traditional 9-to-5 job that may interfere with their needs or medical care.
How SSDI is distributed through the month of December
SSDI benefits are paid on the same schedule as other benefits like retirement, family, and survivor. This is to ensure that payments continue, as when a person becomes eligible for retirement, their benefit schedule will not change or be disrupted.
SSDI benefits are separated into two categories. This includes those who began claiming prior to May 1997 and those who began after that date.
Those who began claiming SSDI before May 1997 receive their benefit on the third of each month, unless the date coincides with a weekend or national holiday, in which case the benefit is distributed on the preceding date when banks are open and the US Postal Service delivers mail. This is to ensure that payments are not delayed.
For those who began receiving benefits after May 1997, the payment date is determined by their birth date.
As a general rule, recipients with birthdays on the 1st-10th of the month will receive their benefits on the second Wednesday of that month, those born on the 11th-20th will receive payouts on the third Wednesday, and those born on the 21st-31st will receive payments on the fourth Wednesday. The National Holiday date change continues to apply to these benefits.
If we consider these dates and we apply them to the month of December, taking into account the quirks in the calendar this month considering the Christmas holidays, we have the following distribution dates:
- December 3: SSDI payment for those who began receiving payments before May 1997. It was distributed yesterday,
- December 11: SSDI payment for those born between the 1st and 10th of any month and started after May 1997. Next week will see this round of payments hit beneficiaries accounts.
- December 18: SSDI payment for those with a birthday between the 11th and 20th of any month and are beneficiaries after May 1997.
- December 24: SSDI payment for those born between the 21st and 31st of any month, beneficiaries after May 1997. The payment should go out on the 25th, but that is Christmas Day, and thus a National Holiday. This means that the payment is delivered in advance to ensure that beneficiaries are not negatively affected by any potential delays.
