Dessert Holdings LLC recalled target brand New York-style cheesecakes on Thursday due to product mislabeling and a possible undeclared pecan allergen.
Why It Matters
Millions of Americans suffer from food allergies or sensitivities each year. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the nine most common food allergens in the United States are eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts, and peanuts.
Customers with a pecan allergy who purchase the cheesecake are at risk of having a serious or fatal reaction.
What to Know
The recalled items were sold at Target locations throughout California, Florida, Iowa, Texas, and Ohio. The product name is Favorite Day™ Gourmet New York Style Cheesecake. It weighs six ounces and is sold in a plastic container.
The impacted product’s lot code is 25028A1 000039133, and its UPC is 0 85239 09690.1. The FDA included images of the recalled products in its alert.
The product was distributed to centers in the five states between February 14 and March 7, according to the alert.
What People Are Saying
The FDA alert said in part: “On March 14, 2025, the company received a customer complaint that the product contained pecans, but the product label did not specify pecans. This issue has been resolved, and no other manufacturing dates or lots are affected. There have been no reported illnesses to date.”
In a previous email to Newsweek in January about food recalls, the FDA said: “Most recalls in the United States are done voluntarily by the product manufacturer, and when a company issues a public warning, usually through a news release, to inform the public of a voluntary product recall, the FDA posts that release on our website as a public service.
“The FDA’s role during a voluntary, firm-initiated, recall is to review the recall strategy, evaluate the health hazard presented by the product, monitor the recall, and as appropriate alert the public and other companies in the supply chain about the recall.”
It continued, “The FDA provides public access to information on recalls by posting a listing of recalls according to their classification in the FDA Enforcement Report, including the specific action taken by the recalling company. The FDA Enforcement Report is intended to provide the public with a list of recalled products in the marketplace.
The FDA’s Recalls, Market Withdrawals, and Safety Alerts webpage provides additional information on recalls.
