A week after hitting and running over a 14-year-old boy, charges have been brought against the driver.
Joshua Raines is accused of leaving the scene of an accident that killed someone or seriously hurt someone else.
He was hit while riding his bike in the 1100 block of North Cumberland Rd. on October 10. He was 14 years old. The driver got away from the scene. Wilberto was seriously hurt and died in the hospital a few days later.
A probable cause statement says that Rivera was riding his bike while his friends walked in the grass. Police were told by Rivera’s friends that he was hit from behind by a black Chrysler that was going south.
Investigators found several pieces that the car had left behind at the scene. These included the glass from the passenger side mirror, clear plastic pieces with on them, and a fake license plate.
According to court papers, an automatic license plate reader found Raine’s black 2019 Chrysler 300 in the area around the time of the crash.
At an intersection, cameras caught the car with damage to the front end and a broken passenger mirror.
After a teenager was hurt in a hit-and-run, the family is looking for justice.
Police found out on October 11 that Raine had gone to the Cumberland PD offices to report an accident on Cumberland Road.
Court records show that Raine told police that he hit something while going to work while listening to loud music.
Raine supposedly said he looked in his rearview mirror and didn’t see anything. He also said he saw a car behind him that didn’t stop, which made him think he had hit a deer.
When Raine saw news stories about the accident involving Rivera, he thought that he might have been driving the car that hit him.
Police were able to connect some of the crash’s parts to Raine’s broken car.
