Arizona drivers should be aware of recent changes and ongoing requirements for driver’s license renewal. While there hasn’t been a recent overhaul in the renewal process itself, there are important details to consider, especially for seniors and those interested in obtaining a Travel ID.
Overview of Arizona Driver’s License Renewal
-
Renewal Periods:
-
- For drivers under 65, licenses are valid until they turn 65, at which point they must renew every five years. However, the photo on the license must be updated every 12 years.
- For drivers over 65, licenses must be renewed every five years.
- Travel IDs, which are REAL-ID compliant, expire every eight years.
- Vision Test: A vision test is required for all renewals, especially for those over 65.
- Documentation: To renew, you need to provide proof of citizenship and residency, along with your current license.
- Fees: The fee for a standard license is $10, while a Travel ID costs $25.
New Driver’s License Design
Arizona has introduced a new driver’s license design featuring enhanced security measures, including dynaprint technology and laser-engraved imagery. The licenses are made of 100% polycarbonate and include a black and white photo to prevent tampering.
Travel ID Requirements
As of May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will only accept Travel IDs, U.S. passports, or other federally approved IDs for domestic air travel. Drivers can opt to upgrade their licenses to include the Travel ID “star” during renewal.
Penalties for Expired Licenses
There is no grace period for expired licenses in Arizona. Driving with an expired license can result in fines and potential jail time.
Renewal Process
Renewals must be done in person at an MVD office or authorized third-party provider. You cannot renew online unless you are replacing a lost or damaged license. Military personnel on active duty outside Arizona can delay renewal until six months after discharge.
