After reportedly shooting three people, an Alameda man requested a Lyft. It led to his arrest on attempted murder charges

Police were looking at video from a security camera that showed a suspect who had shot three people running to a car and driving off.

Then a cop saw something strange: this wasn’t your normal getaway driver. The back of the car had a Lyft sticker on it.

The suspect in three murders had, in fact, called a Lyft to come pick him up from a place that police say almost turned into a murder scene. He is also said to have used his own account.

After looking at records from the rideshare business, police got a warrant for the arrest of 23-year-old Zaire Campbell on charges of trying to kill someone.

Campbell was charged with three counts of attempted murder on August 28. He lives in Alameda.

But he stayed on the run until Wednesday, when he was caught and taken to Santa Rita Jail, according to court records. He wasn’t told where he was caught on the jail intake form.

Around 11 a.m. on August 5, Campbell is said to have shot two 16-year-old boys and a 23-year-old man on the 700 block of Center Street, close to West Oakland BART.

Campbell is said to have fired a gun at them and then ran to a nearby barber college and went inside. Police say he then left to meet his Lyft driver, who took him to his home in Alameda.

Records show that Campbell will make a plea in court on October 23. His wife has also been charged with accessory after the fact because she is said to have kept him safe after the killing.

All three of the victims were hurt and taken to the hospital. Police said one of them was intubated in the ICU and was very close to dying from his injuries.

The other two didn’t help police find a suspect; one said he didn’t know who shot him or why, and the other just wouldn’t talk to officers, police said.
