New York’s state and local police said they would be doing more patrols over the long weekend to catch drunk and distracted drivers. However, it looked like not everyone was reading the memo.
Authorities say a woman from New York state was not only too drunk to drive, but she also made things even more dangerous by going the wrong way on one of the busiest roads in the area.
Authorities say that the crash that followed closed lanes for hours and put two people in serious condition.
Even though New York doesn’t have as many drunk driving deaths as some other states, the problem still exists.
State Police say that a little more than 30% of fatal accidents in New York state are still caused by drunk drivers.
New York State Woman Arrested After Alleged Drunken Wrong-Way Crash on Thruway
In a news release, the New York State Police said that early Saturday morning, they were called to the I-87 Thruway in Albany to help a driver who was going the wrong way. The driver was going north on the southbound lanes.
On I-90 eastbound, just west of Exit 24, state police said they found a two-car accident.
Reports say that the driver of one of the vehicles that was involved was a 29-year-old woman from Glenville who fit the description of the vehicle that was going the wrong way.
Both the suspect and the driver of the other car were seriously hurt and had to be taken to the hospital, where they were both reported as being in critical but stable condition.
The suspect will not be handled right away because she is sick. Police say they are still looking into the case and charges could change. The suspect is being charged with several things, including 2nd degree vehicular attack.
