The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Tuesday that La Fiesta Food Products is recalling eight ounce packets of its La Fiesta brand Unseasoned Bread Crumbs (Pan Rayado) and Seasoned Bread Crumbs (Pan Rayado Sazonado) because they contain sesame as an undeclared allergy.
Furthermore, the bread crumb labels do not have a Spanish allergen declaration.
On Tuesday, Newsweek emailed La Fiesta Food Products to get a comment.
Why It Matters
The FDA advised that eating the recalled bread crumbs if you have a sesame allergy or extreme sensitivity puts you at risk of serious or even fatal allergic reactions.
At the time of the FDA warning, no illnesses had been recorded in association with the recalled La Fiesta bread crumbs.
The FDA already announced that sesame must be listed as an allergy on packaged foods, including dietary supplements, beginning January 1, 2023.
According to the Food Allergy Institute, sesame allergies can be severe and life-threatening in some situations. Symptoms include hives, itchy mouth or throat, swelling of the tongue or lips, runny nose, watery eyes, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, and wheezing, coughing, or shortness of breath.
Sesame allergies can cause anaphylaxis, which is potentially fatal, according to the Food Allergy Institute’s website.
