Big Lots, the well-known discount retailer once headquartered in Columbus, has officially closed all of its stores nationwide, signaling the end of an era for bargain hunters.
The last four locations closed over the weekend, bringing the chain’s total number of stores down from around 1,400 a year ago to zero today.
However, Big Lots will not be gone for long. A major restructuring effort is already underway, with new operator Variety Wholesalers Inc.
preparing to reopen over 200 stores in 13 states under the familiar Big Lots brand. Reopenings will begin on April 10, and all locations are expected to be operational by June.
Ohio remains a key market for the retailer’s revival, with 28 locations set to reopen. These include shops in major cities like Akron, Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati, as well as smaller towns like Gallipolis, Marietta, and Wintersville.
Variety Wholesalers, which owns over 400 discount retail stores such as Roses, Maxway, and Super Dollar, will now oversee operations at the reopened Big Lots stores.
The restructuring comes after Gordon Brothers Retail Partners acquired the stores in January and agreed to transfer them to Variety Wholesalers.
While the footprint has been significantly reduced from its former size, loyal customers in Ohio can expect Big Lots to reopen soon, offering low-cost home goods, furniture, and household essentials.
