A Hayward man has been charged in an Oakland tragic hit-and-run where the victim's leg was severed by a stolen car

Police have arrested and charged the person they think was driving a stolen SUV that hit and killed a 42-year-old man, cutting off his leg. They have been charged with manslaughter.

Police say that Jose Gonzalez, 35, of Hayward, crashed Luciano Carmona-Garcia’s stolen SUV into him, trapping him between the SUV and a minivan and killing him.

Authorities say Gonzalez left the scene of the accident before police arrived, but he left behind a Gatorade bottle that had his DNA on it, which led to his arrest.

The police say Carmona-Garcia died of blood loss after the crash completely cut off his leg.

Court records show that the accident happened on October 25, 2023, in Oakland, in the 4200 block of International Boulevard.

It wasn’t solved until last February, when police say they caught someone driving a stolen car. That person gave them information that helped them figure out that Gonzalez was the driver who hit and killed the person.

According to court records, Gonzalez was arrested in April 2018 for a different car theft investigation after this person gave police information that allowed them to test Gonzalez’s DNA against the Gatorade bottle and airbags in the car.

Records show that Gonzalez was charged with vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, and car theft last month.

According to the criminal complaint, Gonzalez has been convicted of evading police and stealing cars before. The amount of bail set for him is $142,500.
