The Social Security Administration recently made the rental aid exception available to all people who apply for or receive SSI. That means all 50 states will be able to get it.
It was only possible to get help from this move in 7 states before it made it law. It looks like this change in the rules will give about 41,000 Americans an extra $132. So, if you pay at least a certain amount towards your rent, you don’t have to bother with ISM for renting help.
Is this the only advantage for SSI applicants?
Social Security says that if you gain from this new rule, you will not only get a higher payment, but there are other benefits as well. The truth is that more people will be able to get in.
Before the rule, they might have asked for this Federal benefit but not been able to get it because their income was too low. Because of this, they did not get Social Security’s OK. After this change, they should apply now to see if they still qualified.
The Monthly Statistical Snapshot for August 2024 that came out in September and the one that came out in October will be interesting to compare. Thus, people who get SSI can see that their usual payments have gone up from the $698 they get now.
Removal of the ISM calculations and effect on SSI payments
The Agency will no longer count food as In-kind Support and Maintenance (ISM) after September 30, 2024. The benefit sum will also go up to more than $90,000 because of this new rule.
In fact, if you are one of these 90,000 people, your benefits are going to go up by about $131. Those who qualified will feel a lot better about getting an extra $131.
It’s hard to make ends meet because of rising prices and inflation, so this is good news for thousands of people in the United States who get Supplemental Security Income. Things are still changing.
