California's exhaustive search for missing Oregon boy, five ends in tragedy

Joshua McCoy, a five-year-old autistic boy who went missing from his home after taking a nap with his mother, was found dead Tuesday after a massive search by many different agencies.

From the Coos County Sheriff’s Office: “It is with great sadness that we have to report that Joshua McCoy, who was reported missing, has been found dead.”

“The investigation is still going on, and at this time, no more information will be given out,” it said.

McCoy was last seen at his home on Stage Road in Coos County on Saturday, after taking a nap with his mother at 1 p.m. He was gone when she woke up at 5:30 p.m.

After several unsuccessful attempts, including pinging McCoy’s cellphone, which did not yield any useful information, draining a pond on the family’s property, and searching the home, search teams finally found the boy around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 1.6 miles directly northwest of his home.

California and Oregon officials searched for days with dozens of people on the ground, drones, detectives, K9s, and more. The tragic discovery marks the end of their exhaustive search.

Homeland Security and the FBI even helped with the rescue, which was done by volunteers and police departments from all over Oregon.

The SFGATE asked the Coos County Sheriff’s Office for comment, but they had not responded right away by the time this article was published.
