The most you can get from SSDI in 2024 is $3,822. However, this maximum amount is very hard for a single person to reach. There is a chance, but only for people who have earned the taxable maximum (contribution and benefit base) for 35 years. When prices go up, Social Security changes the amount of payments people get. For the Agency to do this, they use COLAs.

The newest COLA Fact Sheet shows that a worker with a disability, a spouse, and one or more children will get an estimated $2,826 in Social Security benefits every month in January 2025. Of course, that much money can only be given to people who have earned it and meet the requirements. The amount of SSDI you get may be more or less than this average.

When will the first $2,826 average SSDI payment be sent?

Social Security’s payment schedule says that the first Disability Insurance payments with the new COLA will be made on January 3, 2024. You will get paid today if you meet one of these two conditions.

If you began getting SSDI before May 1997, you will get paid on January 3. If you are getting both SSI and SSDI, that’s another possibility. Keep in mind that the reason you get SSI along with SSDI is likely because your SSDI payment is less than the average.

There will be three more paydays after January 3. The 2025 COLA increase will be added to these paydays. Not much of a boost—just 2.5%—but you need it if your disability benefit is low and you depend on it.

Who can receive SSDI on January 8, 15 or 22?

These paydays will be for those who:

  • do not qualify and do not receive SSI
  • did not start getting Social Security Disability Insurance before May 1997
  • their birthday falls from:
    • the 1st through the 10th
    • the 11th through the 20th
    • the 21st through the 31st

The current average SSDI payment is of about $1,542, with a 2.5% increase will be of about 38 dollars. It will not be as high as the expected boost for retirees of about 50 dollars.
