The race for Hamilton County prosecutor is heating up, and for the first time in twenty years, Joe Deters will not be on the ballot.
Instead, voters will see two women on the ballot, marking a historic first.
Hamilton County has never elected a female prosecutor.
This election pits former state representative Connie Pillich, Deters’ appointed successor, against current Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers.
Ashley Kirklen of WLWT met with both women to discuss their experience and vision for the position.
Powers, who has spent 31 years in criminal law as an assistant prosecutor, municipal judge, juvenile court judge, private defense attorney, and more, believes that her experience qualifies her to continue in her current position.
Connie Pillich, an Air Force veteran, former state representative, and former criminal defense attorney, believes her leadership experience qualifies her for the role.
Pillich says she also brings policy experience, trial practice, and business sense needed to modernize the office, which she believes the prosecutor’s office currently lacks.
