A preschool teacher and her one-year-old daughter were killed in a fire at their vacation rental over the weekend. The neighborhood is very saddened by their deaths.
On October 13, at 10:40 p.m., New York State Police were called to a home in Clinton, New York.
Police say a guy outside the house told them that two kids and their mother were inside. The house was filled with Shannon Hubbard, 35, her one-year-old daughter Maggie, and her three-year-old son.
It was the fire that killed Hubbard and Maggie.
The mother, who was 35 years old, taught preschool at Chatham Elementary School in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The fire happened while the family was on vacation in New York.
CapeCod.com says that Hubbard’s husband John and the three-year-old were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. John is a police officer in the Massachusetts town of Dennis.
It’s not clear what caused the fire.
After the teacher’s sad death, the Monomoy School District put out a message.
“This loss will definitely shock and hurt everyone at our school.” Tomorrow, our elementary schools will have support teams and counselors who are trained to help students, staff, and families in times like these. “This is for your children,” Superintendent Scott Carpenter told the parents.
“This loss makes us very sad, and we will do everything we can to help if it’s needed.” We are here to help Shannon’s family through this hard time, and we will share any details they want about memorials or services.
John’s police department also said something about what happened after the terrible event.
As head of the Dennis Police Department, Chief John Brady said, “I send my deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Patrolman John Hubbard’s family on the tragic deaths of his wife, Shannon Hubbard, and one-year-old daughter, Margaret “Maggie” Hubbard last weekend.”
“The men and women of the Dennis Police Department are sad about this terrible news.” Patrolman Hubbard is a respected member of our team and the community. More importantly, he is a friend of ours. We’re very sorry for what happened to him and his family.
A campaign to raise money for the family has been started by the Greg Hill Foundation. More than $67,500 has been raised to help the family members who are still alive.
