A Potential "Life-Threatening" Reaction Has Caused Three States to Recall Chocolate

A chocolate-covered pretzel product has been recalled in three states due to an undeclared milk allergy.

Why It Matters

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product,” according to a release on the FDA’s website.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “food allergies affect an estimated 15 million people in the United States, accounting for approximately 30,000 emergency department visits and 150-200 deaths each year.”

What To Know

United Natural Trading of Edison, New Jersey announced the voluntary recall of Fresh Direct Dark Chocolate Covered Pretzels after the problem was detected during a “internal review of the label management system.”

The items were sold online through a third-party vendor site and distributed in limited numbers to Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York.

The announcement stated that no infections had been reported as of January 30.
According to the announcement, the lot number is on the back of each retail package.

Cal Yee Farm’s Dark Chocolate Almonds, Apricots, and Walnuts received a Class 1 recall rating following a December recall that affected stores in nine states, including California, Arizona, Virginia, New Mexico, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Cal Yee Farms stated in a press release issued during the December recall that “no illnesses have been reported to date.”

So far in January, the FDA has recalled at least six more goods because of undeclared milk.

What Happens Next

Consumers who still have the pretzel product with the indicated lot number should dispose of it rather than consume it, according to the release.

To get a refund, customers should save their internet receipts, packaging with the lot number, or other proof of purchase. If customers have any questions, they can call the company at 732-650-9905.
