LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear is raising concerns about potential Medicaid cuts proposed by House Republicans.
House Republicans are working on a budget package that includes two of President Donald Trump’s top priorities: increased border security and an extension of his tax cuts.
To pay for it, the GOP intends to make significant cuts, with Medicaid accounting for a sizable portion.
According to Beshear, the cuts will disproportionately affect Kentucky’s rural communities.
“Medicaid is a driving force in rural health care. Without it, hospitals will close. We will see job losses among nurses, doctors, and everyone else who works in those facilities.
But the worst-case scenario is that our families will have to drive two hours, sometimes more, just to get a regular appointment to keep them healthy,” he said on X.
House Republicans plan to cut $880 billion from Medicaid and another $230 billion from SNAP benefits.
However, it contradicts Trump’s rhetoric, as he has stated that he will not touch Medicaid.
Despite this, Trump has already supported the House Republican proposal.
