New York City councilwoman proposes bill to shield migrant shelter locations from public and amid illegal migration crackdown

A New York City councilwoman is proposing legislation that would keep the addresses of certain migrant shelters serving new arrivals hidden from the public during the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

Councilwoman Julie Won, who represents part of Queens, introduced the bill on Thursday.

The proposal would “prohibit any mayoral agency or office that operates emergency or temporary shelter facilities exclusively serving new arrivals from publicly disclosing the address or location,” Won wrote on Instagram.

If a warrant is issued or other legal requirements are met, the location of such facilities will be made public.

Won referred to the migrants’ right to privacy and the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

“As the federal administration continues to promote policies targeting immigrants, it is our responsibility to protect the dignity and wellbeing of our newest neighbors,” she said in an email.

Won told Fox News Digital that newly arrived immigrants have the same right to privacy and dignity as anyone else.

“As the federal administration continues to promote policies targeting immigrants and go against existing sanctuary city protections like Executive Order 41 and Local Law 228 of 2017, that limit federal immigration enforcement activities in city-operated shelters, my bill Intro.

1198 ensures that shelter addresses are not publicly disclosed unless required by law,” according to her. “As a sanctuary city, it is our responsibility to strengthen existing laws and ensure the safety of our new neighbors.

We will continue to ensure the safety and privacy of new arrivals in our shelters, despite the uncertainty and anxiety caused by recent federal decisions.”

The bill comes as Mayor Eric Adams has stated that he will work with the Trump administration to reduce the flow of illegal immigrants. On Thursday, he met with Tom Homan, the Border Czar.

Following the closed-door meeting, Adams stated that he intends to reopen the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office on Rikers Island so that suspected “dangerous” illegal immigrants can be deported.

“Getting back to Rikers Island is a game changer. Not only do we have the bad guys on the streets, but we also have access to intelligence about how [Tren de Aragua] operates, where they operate, and everything else they gather at Rikers Island,” Homan said on “Fox & Friends” Friday alongside Adams.

“The far left has hijacked this narrative [that] ICE is running in our schools and churches, and they are causing this frenzy. They are not in the business of simply grabbing children. “We just need to stop all this noise,” Mayor Adams said.
