Social Security administers Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is similar to a friend who lends a helping hand when times are tough. It is available for seniors, people with disabilities who are unable to work, and families in certain situations.
But be careful: it is not an automatic “gift.” Certain requirements must be met, so we’ll go over them one by one to avoid boredom.
Age or your health status. If you have turned 65, you are already a member of the club. If not, but you have a disability that prevents you from working for an extended period of time (at least a year or terminal), you can still apply. The keyword here is “long term.”
It doesn’t count if you break your foot and are back to normal after three months. It must be something that has a lasting impact on your daily life.
Apply for SSI in 2025: Have the requirements changed?
If you want to be considered eligible for SSI, you must be a US citizen or legal resident with proper paperwork. There are some exceptions, such as refugees or people with specific immigration statuses, but this is already shaky ground and may not apply to you.
If you find yourself in this situation, the best course of action is to consult with an expert directly. Of course, you cannot apply if you have left the country for more than 30 days in a row. In other words, if you went to Cancun for two months, forget it.
Many people are concerned about income limits. By 2025, if you are single, you cannot have more than $2,000 in savings, investments, and other resources; if you are applying as a couple, the limit increases to $3,000.
However, keep in mind that not everything counts: your home, your primary vehicle, and some basic items are excluded.
Income is also important: if you make very little or nothing, you are still eligible because these benefits are specifically designed for people in financial need. Those who work part-time may also be considered eligible.

The process to enter SSI: easier than you think (but with patience)
Applying isn’t like running a marathon, but it’s also not a sprint. You can complete it online through the SSA website or in person at an office.
What do you need? Papers confirming your identity (your ID, birth certificate), proof of your income and resources (bank statements, pay stubs), and medical reports if you apply for disability benefits.
If you’re too lazy to look for everything, consider this: organizing an afternoon is preferable to wasting months due to a lack of documents.
If you are filing a disability claim, expect the Social Security Administration to go over every detail of your medical history. They will want to know how your condition impacts your daily life and ability to work.
Here’s a trick: simply saying “my back hurts” isn’t enough. You need concrete evidence, such as diagnoses, treatments, and doctor’s letters. Yes, they will sometimes ask you to be evaluated by their doctor. It is not personal; they simply want to ensure that everything adds up.
How much can they give you in SSI allowances?
In 2025, the maximum monthly payment for an individual eligible for SSI is $943, while a couple who cohabitates and applies together can be approved for up to $1,450.
Finally, the program can provide a maximum of $484 per month to beneficiaries who require assistance with daily tasks.
