DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN)— A toddler is in stable condition after allegedly shooting themselves on Monday.
According to the German Township Police Department, crews were summoned at 5:10 p.m. on February 10 to the 5400 block of Ballentine Pike in German Township on a report of a child being shot in the legs.
When police, medics, and Clark County sheriff deputies arrived on the scene, they discovered a 2-year-old shot. An early inquiry revealed that the toddler allegedly picked up their mother’s purse, which contained a semi-automatic weapon.
The child allegedly moved the handbag from the kitchen table to the living room, where their father was lying on the floor. The pistol discharged, striking the youngster. The father was allegedly grazed by the firearm’s firing while on the floor.
The two-year-old was taken to surrounding hospitals for treatment. According to authorities, the boy is still in the hospital but in stable condition.
Police apparently discovered video evidence of the incident, which they claim strengthens the case.
The matter will be turned over to the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office for examination and determination of potential charges.
