Winter Weather Update for New York: Snow Will Affect Finger Lakes and the Southern Tier Through Monday Evening

Binghamton, NY – Snow is expected to fall across much of central New York this afternoon, causing travel delays and slippery road conditions throughout the region.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued advisories for the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, and Catskills. Accumulations of 4-6 inches are expected, with higher amounts near Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and the Pocono Mountains.

According to the NWS, snowfall will begin near noon in northeastern Pennsylvania and move into central New York between 1 and 3 p.m.

Binghamton, Elmira, and Ithaca could see 2-4 inches by early Monday, while Syracuse and Utica are expected to receive only 1-2 inches. Evening commutes can be hazardous, particularly along major routes such as I-86, I-81, and I-88.

Travelers should exercise caution because untreated roads may become icy as temperatures fall, with wind chills reaching single digits tonight. Drivers in higher-elevation areas should expect reduced visibility and worsening conditions after sunset.

Snow showers are expected to continue into Monday morning before tapering off. Monday’s high temperatures will be around 18°F, with wind chills making it feel closer to -4°F. A period of bitter cold will follow until midweek, with sub-zero temperatures and wind chills as low as -25°F expected Monday night and Wednesday.

Residents are encouraged to limit unnecessary travel and dress warmly to avoid frostbite. Stay up to date on local advisories and make sure your vehicles are winter-ready. Visit weather.gov for more information.
